About Calcutta International Airport

The international airport in Calcutta, India, is named in honor of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose who was a major leader in India's struggle for independence. It is one of the busiest airports in India as well as one of the largest. In fact, the Calcutta airport is the largest airport in Eastern India.

The Calcutta airport dates back to the earliest days of aviation history. This is due to Calcutta's strategic location as a stop over for flights going on to Australia and the rest of Asia. The airport was converted to military use by the British in World War II, and it was used extensively as a base for bomber operations into Southeast Asia.

Today, Calcutta's airport is a modern facility consisting of three terminals. Domestic, international and cargo flights each have a terminal dedicated to their particular use. A fourth terminal is currently under construction and is designed to accommodate the large rise in passenger's expected in the years to come.

The majority of the airport's flights are domestic in nature. Currently, over 700 domestic flights depart and arrive from the airport on a weekly basis. In addition, over 130 flights arrive and depart from the international terminal. The major international airlines utilizing the Calcutta airport are United Airways, Air India, Lufthansa and Emirates Air.

Calcutta's airport is easily accessible. Travelers to and from the airport will find ample parking. The airport is linked to Calcutta's city railway system making it easy for travelers to access the airport facilities. There are also several bus lines and taxi services available as well.

For those waiting on flights, the airport has several cafes where travelers may relax with a beverage. Also, each terminal contains a duty-free shop for browsing.
